K.S. Radhakrishnan

K.S. Radhakrishnan is one of India’s most prominent contemporary artists. He is a sculptor and uses bronze as his primary medium. Radhakrishnan was born in Kottayam, Kerala, in 1956, and pursued his artistic training from the renown Shantinekatan School in 1973 under Kala Bhavna of Vishwabharati University. At Vishwabharati University, he trained under Ramkinkar Baij and Sarbari Roy Chowdhury. In 1978, Radhakrishnan was awarded with the National Scholarship of Art from the government of India. During the early stages of his career, Radhakrishnan was invited to many exhibitions, such as at the Birla Academy of Art and Culture and at Lalit Kala Academy. In 1981, Radhakrishnan completed his MFA and pursued a research grant at the Lalit Kala Academy (in New Delhi), working in Garhi Village.

Some of Radhakrishnan’s notable solo shows include exhibitions at the National Gallery of Modern Art (Bangalore), Centre des Bonds de Marne, LePerreux-Brysur-Marne (France), Lalit Kala Akademi (New Delhi), Salon International de la Sculpture Contemporaine at Nouveav Forum des Halles, Paris (1995); Hippodrome d’elongchamp, Paris (1996); Espace Michel Simon-Noisy le grand, France (1996); Beijing Biennale (2012). From 1980’s onwards Radhakrishnan has installed open air sculptures across the country and abroad including at the TMI foundation, Cotignac, France.

Radhakrishnan’s most notable motifs are of the male and female icons Maiya and Musui, who represent the duality of human nature. Often depicted as Maiya resting on Musui’s shoulder, this motif emulates female empowerment and strength. Sculptures of Maiya and Musui range from smaller, hand-sized pieces to larger installations.

Radhakrishnan has also organized shows in memory of preeminent artists. For example, he curated the show “Ramkinkar Baij A Retrospective at National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai,” and he has also written a book titled “Ramkikar’s Yaksha Yakshi.” Radhakrishnan has also been awarded numerous accolades for his extraordinary artistic abilities, most notably the KCS Panickar Puraskar Award from the government of Kerala in 2011. Radhakrishnan currently resides in New Delhi with his wife and fellow artist, Mimi, and their son.
